The Theory of Time Travel

The Complete Physics — and the Theory of Causal Elasticity

PART 0 — Newton’s foundation: the three-hundred-year prologue

Isaac Newton, in the Principia (1687), wrote down the mechanics that still runs the solar system. He is not a detour in a paper about time travel. He is the base layer. Every equation in Parts I–IX is Newton’s physics, continued. Two of his ideas matter more than the rest: the laws of motion, and something he never lived to see derived from them — the action principle, which turns out to be the entire reason time dilation exists.

0.1 The three laws (1687)

I. A body keeps its velocity unless forced. (Inertia.) II. Force equals the rate of change of momentum: F = dp/dt. III. Every action begets an equal and opposite reaction.

In Newton’s own mechanics p = mv, and II becomes F = ma. In the modern relativistic version, momentum is the four-vector’s spatial part p = γmv, and the same law F = dp/dt survives intact — Newton’s second law is built so well that three centuries of relativity did not break it; they only redefined p. The limit is exact:

        lim_{v/c → 0}  γ m v  =  m v ,        γ = 1 / √(1 − v²/c²)

In words: Newtonian mechanics is relativity with γ ≈ 1. Part I of this paper is simply what happens when that approximation stops being good enough.

0.2 Universal gravitation — and its field equation

Newton’s gravity, vector and potential form:

        F⃗  =  − ( G M m / r² ) r̂ ,        Φ(r)  =  − G M / r ,        G = 6.6742×10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg²

The potential satisfies Poisson’s equation — the field equation of Newtonian gravity:

        ∇²Φ  =  4πG ρ

Numbers that prove this theory is real (all computed, arithmetic shown, in Appendix B.1):

QuantityFormulaComputedReality
Earth’s surface gravityg = GM/R²9.82 m/s²9.81 m/s² ✓
Earth’s escape velocityv_e = √(2GM/R)11.19 km/s11.2 km/s ✓
Sun’s escape v at Earth’s orbit√(2GM☉/r)42.1 km/s42.1 km/s ✓
ISS orbital period (Kepler III)T² = 4π²a³/GM92.8 min92.9 min ✓

In words: Poisson’s equation, the 18th-century descendant of Newton’s law, is the direct ancestor of Einstein’s field equation. Change ∇²Φ into the Einstein tensor G_μν, and 4πGρ into 8πG T_μν/c⁴, and you have moved from Newton’s universe to ours. Newton wrote the first draft of the same book.

0.3 The action principle — the deepest thing in Newton’s legacy

In the 1700s, Maupertuis, Euler and Lagrange found that Newton’s laws have a second, equivalent form — and it is the form in which all of modern physics is written. Define the action:

        S  =  ∫ L(q, q̇, t) dt ,        L  =  T − V

Theorem (Euler–Lagrange). Among all paths q(t) between fixed endpoints q(t₁) = q₁ and q(t₂) = q₂, the physically realized path is the one for which δS = 0.

Proof. Let q(t) be the true path and consider the varied path q(t) + εη(t), with η(t₁) = η(t₂) = 0 and ε a small parameter. The first-order variation of the action is

        δS  =  ∫ ( ∂L/∂q · η  +  ∂L/∂q̇ · η̇ )  dt

Integrate the second term by parts:

        ∫ ∂L/∂q̇ · η̇  dt  =  [ ∂L/∂q̇ · η ]_{t₁}^{t₂}  −  ∫ d/dt( ∂L/∂q̇ ) · η  dt

The boundary term vanishes because η = 0 at the fixed endpoints. Hence

        δS  =  ∫ [ ∂L/∂q  −  d/dt( ∂L/∂q̇ ) ]  η  dt  =  0

Since η(t) is arbitrary, the bracketed term must vanish identically:

        d/dt ( ∂L/∂q̇ )  −  ∂L/∂q  =  0                                              ∎

In words: nature does not compute forces and integrate them. Nature stationarizes a quantity called the action. This little theorem — six lines of calculus — is the spine of everything that follows: it gives us quantum mechanics, it gives us general relativity, and in §0.4 it gives us, for free, the twin paradox.

0.4 The action, made relativistic — where the twin paradox actually comes from

For a free particle, take the relativistic Lagrangian:

        L  =  − m c² √( 1 − v²/c² )

Generalized momentum is p = ∂L/∂v. Compute it:

        p  =  ∂L/∂v  =  − m c² · ( − v / c² ) / √(1 − v²/c²)  =  γ m v               ✓

Hamiltonian (total energy) is H = p·v − L:

        H  =  γ m v²  +  m c² / γ  =  γ m c²  ,        E  =  γ m c²
        E²  =  ( p c )²  +  ( m c² )²

But now look at the action itself:

        S  =  ∫ L dt  =  − m c ∫ dτ  =  − m c × ( proper time )

In words: a free particle’s action is proportional to its own proper time — the time the traveler’s body actually registers. Stationarizing S therefore means extremizing proper time: between two fixed events, the straight (inertial) worldline carries the most proper time, and every bent, accelerated, roaring-rocket worldline carries less. The twin paradox is the Euler–Lagrange theorem, applied to a path that is not straight. This is the unification nobody told you about: Newton’s δS = 0 (§0.3) is the reason Scott Kelly came home younger than his brother (§1.5). Three hundred and thirty years of physics, one line of action.

0.5 From Newton to Einstein, in four equations

The exact correspondence, in the weak-field, slow-motion limit:

NewtonEinstein (limit)
∇²Φ = 4πGρG_μν + Λg_μν = (8πG/c⁴) T_μν
⃗a = −∇Φ (F = ma)geodesic equation (Eq. 44)
Φ = −GM/rg_00 ≈ −( 1 + 2Φ/c² )

Proposition (Newtonian limit). In the limit v ≪ c and |Φ| ≪ c², Einstein’s geodesic equation reduces to Newton’s ⃗a = −∇Φ, and the 00-component of Einstein’s field equations reduces to Poisson’s equation ∇²Φ = 4πGρ.

Proof: Appendix B, §B.2 — reproduced there line by line. ∎

In words: Einstein did not replace Newton. He completed him. The entire theory of time in this paper — Gödel, Kerr, Thorne, the closed timelike curves of Part II — lives entirely inside the correction terms. Newton is the floor we stand on to look at time.

PART I — The proven physics: time is elastic

1.1 The setting: Einstein’s two papers

In 1905 Einstein gave us special relativity (SR) — the physics of moving clocks. In 1915 he gave us general relativity (GR) — the physics of gravity as curved geometry. The master equation of GR is:

        G_μν + Λ g_μν  =  (8πG / c⁴) T_μν

In words: Geometry (left side) = energy and matter (right side). Matter tells spacetime how to bend; bent spacetime tells matter how to move. The constant (8πG/c⁴) ≈ 8.26×10⁻⁴⁵ m/J tells you that only enormous energies bend spacetime noticeably.

Everything in Parts I–III is a consequence of this single line. Time travel — to the future — follows from it immediately. Time travel to the past follows from it conditionally. Let’s do the future first, because it is already done.

1.2 The equation that changes everything: the Lorentz factor

The light clock derivation. A photon bounces between two mirrors; one bounce = one tick. On a moving train, the photon traces a diagonal, and since light’s speed is the same for every observer (Einstein’s postulate), the diagonal path takes more time.

From the Pythagorean theorem on that triangle of light:

        (c·t')²  =  (c·t)²  +  (v·t')²

Solving for the moving observer’s time t’:

            t'  =  γ · t ,        γ  ≡  1 / √(1 − v²/c²)

In words: the faster you move, the slower you age, by the factor γ (gamma). At everyday speeds γ ≈ 1 to fifteen decimal places. Near the speed of light γ runs away to infinity.

SpeedγTraveler’s 1 hour =
100 km/h1.0000000000000041 hour
0.5 c1.151 h 9 min
0.9 c2.292 h 18 min
0.99 c7.097 h 5 min
0.9999 c70.7~2.9 days
0.99995 c100~4.2 days

The proper time along any path — the time your body actually accumulates — is the integral:

            Δτ  =  ∫ √(1 − v(t)²/c²)  dt

In words: age is the area under your worldline after shrinking by your speed. Take the long fast route and you age less. This is not a perception; it is the geometry of spacetime. The twin paradox is not a paradox: the traveling twin’s worldline is simply shorter.

The classic application (Gott, Time Travel in Einstein’s Universe, p. 33): a craft at 99.995% of light speed carries a traveler for what feels like 10 years — and arrives at an Earth 1,000 years older. γ = 100. Done. Future time travel is only an engineering problem.

1.3 Gravity slows time

Near a mass, the rate of a clock (Schwarzschild geometry, outside a spherical body) is:

            dτ/dt  =  √(1 − 2GM / (r c²))

In words: the deeper you sit in a gravitational well, the slower your clock runs relative to the distant universe. The term 2GM/c² has a name — it is the Schwarzschild radius, the size of the black hole that mass would make. Time dilation is literally “how close you are to being a black hole.”

Measured values of this single equation:

  • Earth’s surface: 2GM/(Rc²) ≈ 1.39×10⁻⁹ → clocks at sea level lose ~0.02 seconds per year relative to deep space.
  • GPS altitude (20,200 km): +45.8 μs/day faster than the ground.
  • A black hole’s edge (event horizon): dτ/dt → 0. To the outside universe, you freeze. (You, meanwhile, fall through, in your own time, and die.)
  • Gott’s example (Gott 2001, p. 76): a spherical shell five meters across with the mass of Jupiter — time at its center runs four times slower than far away. That is essentially a black hole worn inside-out. This is what “gravity slows time” means at the extreme.

1.4 The proof in your pocket: GPS

GPS satellites: v ≈ 3.87 km/s, altitude ≈ 20,200 km. Two competing relativistic effects:

Special relativity (motion slows the clock):

        Δ(rate) / rate  ≈  ½ v²/c²  =  ½ (3.87×10³)² / (3×10⁸)²  ≈  8.3×10⁻¹¹
        →  7.2 μs/day LOST

General relativity (weaker gravity speeds the clock):

        Δ(rate) / rate  ≈  ΔU/c²  ≈  5.3×10⁻¹⁰
        →  45.8 μs/day GAINED

Net: +38.6 μs/day. Error if uncorrected: 38.6 μs × c ≈ 11.6 km/day of position error.

In words: the report from the future is already written into your phone. Every time you see your blue dot, relativity is being paid for in real time. (Ashby 2003; standard GPS engineering practice since the 1980s.)

1.5 Four independent proofs, and one human story

#ProofYearResult
1GPS satellitesrunning+38.6 μs/day → 11.6 km/day if uncorrected
2Hafele–Keating (cesium clocks on jets)1972Eastward: −59 ns; Westward: +273 ns — predicted −40/+275 ns
3Pound–Rebka (gamma rays up a 22.5 m stairwell)1959Δf/f = gh/c² = 2.45×10⁻¹⁵ measured, as predicted
4Frisch–Smith (cosmic-ray muons)1963Muons at 0.99c reach sea level; without γ they’d decay at ~650 m

The muon numbers, worked out: half-life τ½ = 2.2 μs; at v = 0.99c, γ ≈ 7.09:

        distance without dilation  =  0.99c × 2.2 μs  ≈  650 m
        distance with dilation     =  γ × 650 m       ≈  4.6 km

In words: the universe runs this experiment over our heads, constantly, for free. Muons are genuine time travelers — and the only reason cosmic-ray physics exists.

The human story: astronauts age less than the rest of us. Current technology buys a few milliseconds for a few hundred days in orbit. Scott Kelly, after 340 days on the ISS, is ~8.6 milliseconds younger than his twin Mark. The twin paradox has two real test subjects, and they are Americans from New Jersey. (Wikipedia, “Time travel”: current technology limit of “a few milliseconds”; Kelly–Kelly comparison widely reported.)

Part I, in one sentence: The future is open, reachable, measured, and already partially used. Time travel to the future is not a theory — it is an engineering budget line.

The past is where the real question lives.

1.6 Gravity slows time — the derivation from Einstein’s happiest thought

The equivalence principle: a uniform acceleration is locally indistinguishable from a uniform gravitational field. Take a rocket accelerating at g. Send light from the floor to the ceiling, height h. The light’s flight time is t ≈ h/c; during that time the ceiling gains speed Δv = g·t = gh/c, so the received light is Doppler-shifted by

        Δf / f  ≈  Δv / c  =  g h / c²

By the equivalence principle, the same shift must occur in a real gravitational field, with g replaced by the potential difference:

        Δf / f  =  ΔΦ / c²

And from the metric itself (Schwarzschild, Eq. 5), the exact statement:

        dτ/dt  =  √( 1 − 2GM/(r c²) )  ≈  1 − GM/(r c²)  =  1 + Φ/c²

so two clocks at different heights differ in rate by exactly (Φ₁ − Φ₂)/c².

Checks: Pound–Rebka, h = 22.5 m: gh/c² = 2.45×10⁻¹⁵ — measured (1959). GPS: the same formula, one size bigger (§1.4). The arithmetic for both is in Appendix B. ∎

In words: gravity slows time because acceleration slows time, and the universe cannot tell acceleration from gravity. That single equivalence — a thought experiment about an elevator — is why your phone needs Einstein to work.

1.7 The twin paradox, arithmetic on the table

A star 5 light-years away. Ship speed v = 0.866c, so 1 − v²/c² = 1 − 0.750 = 0.250, hence γ = 2 exactly.

        Earth-frame one-way time:    t  =  5 ly / 0.866 c  =  5.77 years
        Traveler's proper time:      τ  =  t / γ  =  2.89 years
        Round trip: Earth twin 11.5 years , ship twin 5.77 years
        Δ(age)  =  ( 1 − 1/γ ) · t_round  =  ½ · 11.5  =  5.77 years

Same equation, three scales: this is the arithmetic inside Hafele–Keating’s jet clocks (59 ns / 273 ns, 1972), inside Scott Kelly’s 8.6 ms, and inside the starship. Nothing changes but the size of γ.

1.8 The theory that predicted itself into being: three checks that proved Einstein right

Before anyone argues about whether time loops are “real,” respect this: the same equation set (E1) whose solutions contain the loops (Part II) also predicted, before any measurement existed:

(All arithmetic worked in Appendix B.3.)

In words: a theory with this record does not get dismissed when it quietly admits a loop in four of its exact solutions. It gets argued with, seriously, for a century. That argument is Part II and Part III.

PART II — The roadmaps: every path from GR to the past

Einstein’s field equation (§1.1) admits solutions where the timeline bends back on itself. These are closed timelike curves (CTCs). A CTC is a road: travel along it and you arrive at your own departure.

Six roadmaps are known. Here is all of them, with their equations and their prices.

2.1 Gödel’s rotating universe (1949)

Kurt Gödel’s gift to Einstein’s 70th birthday: an exact solution — dust, rotating, with a cosmological constant. In suitable coordinates (natural units, c = 1) it reads:

        ds² = −(dt + e^{αx} dy)² + dx² + ½ e^{2αx} dy² + dz² ,   α = √2

with rotation rate tied to the matter density by Ω = √(4πGρ). The famous consequence: light cones tip over as you move outward, and beyond a critical radius:

        r_c  ~  c / Ω  =  c / √(4πGρ)     ≈  c / (2√(πGρ))

In words: make the universe spin, and past a certain distance the future direction points backward. Time loops are not a hack in this universe — they are the weather.

The playful calculation: fill Gödel’s universe with water (ρ = 1000 kg/m³):

        √(4πGρ) = √(4π × 6.674×10⁻¹¹ × 1000) ≈ 9.2×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹
        r_c ≈ 3×10⁸ / 9.2×10⁻⁴ ≈ 3.3×10¹¹ m ≈ 2.2 AU

In words: with the density of water, time loops begin around the asteroid belt — conventions on the numerical factor of 2 vary by source; the scaling does not. (Gödel 1949, Rev. Mod. Phys. 21, 447.)

The catch: our universe is not rotating. Observations of the cosmic microwave background constrain global rotation to essentially zero. Gödel’s is a proof of possibility, not a blueprint. But the proof is decisive: the best-tested theory of gravity admits time loops. Nothing in GR forbids them.

2.2 van Stockum / Lanczos / Tipler: the spinning cylinder

Willem van Stockum (1937) — building on Lanczos (1924) — found a rotating dust cylinder with CTCs; Frank Tipler (1974) re-analyzed and extended it: a super-dense, rapidly rotating cylinder drags spacetime around itself (frame dragging — a real effect, measured around Earth by Gravity Probe B). Fly around it on the right trajectory, and you meet your own past.

The price: the original Tipler solution requires an infinitely long cylinder; the density and rotational speed exceed what any known material can survive. (Wikipedia: “the density and speed required is so great that ordinary matter is not strong enough to construct it.”)

2.3 The Kerr black hole: loops inside the ring

The rotating (uncharged) black hole, in Boyer–Lindquist coordinates:

        ds² = −(1 − 2Mr/Σ) dt² − (4Mar sin²θ/Σ) dt dφ
              + (Σ/Δ) dr² + Σ dθ²
              + [ (r² + a²) + 2Ma² r sin²θ/Σ ] sin²θ dφ²

        Σ ≡ r² + a² cos²θ ,   Δ ≡ r² − 2Mr + a² ,   a = J/(Mc)

In words: a spinning black hole drags spacetime into a whirlpool (the ergosphere), and deep inside, for r < 0 through the ring singularity, the coordinate φ turns timelike — you can loop in φ and return to your own past. The exterior of Kerr is “generic” — rotating black holes are the normal kind in nature — which the literature calls “rather unnerving.”

The consensus: “most physicists feel that CTCs in such solutions are artifacts” of the idealization (Roy Kerr’s Crafoord lecture, as cited in the standard literature). The interior is also hidden behind an event horizon, so the loops may be censored but not forbidden — see Outcome G in Part VIII.

2.4 Misner space, Bonnor–Steadman, and the “laboratory” machines

  • Misner space: Minkowski spacetime “orbifolded by a discrete boost” — the simplest toy model of a time machine, and the standard testbed for chronology-protection calculations.
  • Bonnor & Steadman (2005, Gen. Rel. Grav. 37, 1833): exact Einstein–Maxwell solutions with CTCs constructed from “laboratory situations such as two spinning balls.” Yes — two spinning balls in the right configuration are, in principle, a time machine. Nobody has built it; the masses and spins are beyond reach. But it is in the equations, and it makes the point sharper than any cosmic example: CTCs are not exotic only at cosmic scale.

2.5 Gott’s cosmic strings (1991)

Two cosmic strings (hypothetical 1-D defects of the early universe) passing each other at near-light speed drag spacetime into a closed time loop around the pair (Gott 1991, PRL 66, 1126). The price: the mass-energy is comparable to half a galaxy. Cosmic strings themselves have never been observed.

2.6 Traversable wormholes — the serious candidate

Morris–Thorne (1988) asked the engineering question (in the American Journal of Physics, deliberately so students could read it):

        ds² = −e^{2Φ(r)} c² dt² + dr²/(1 − b(r)/r) + r² dΩ²

In words: Φ(r) is the “shape function” of gravity; b(r) is the “shape function” of the tunnel’s width. Where b(r₀) = r₀ is the throat — the narrowest point of the tunnel.

The flaring-out condition at the throat:

        ( b − b' r ) / b²  >  0   at r = r₀

which, via the Einstein equations, requires:

        ( ρ c² + p_r ) |_{r₀}  <  0

In words: to hold a tunnel open you need matter whose energy density plus radial pressure is negative — “exotic matter” that violates the null energy condition. Soap bubbles of negative energy. Normal matter pinches the tunnel shut.

The miracle: exotic matter is real. The Casimir effect — two conducting plates in vacuum pulled together by the vacuum itself:

        F/A  =  −π² ℏ c / (240 d⁴)        (force per unit area)
        u    =  −π² ℏ c / (720 d⁴)        (energy density in the gap)

At d = 10 nm: F/A ≈ 1.3 atmospheres of pressure, and u ≈ −4.3×10⁴ J/m³ — a thimble of negative energy. Measured (Lamoreaux 1997, PRL 78, 5; refined since). Visser, Kar & Dadhich (2003, PRL 90, 201102) further showed the amount of negative energy needed “can be made arbitrarily small” in the design. And “quantum effects can lead to small measurable violations of the null energy condition” (Visser, Lorentzian Wormholes).

The time machine recipe (Morris–Thorne–Yurtsever 1988, PRL 61, 1446): take one wormhole mouth on a relativistic round trip. It comes back younger than its twin mouth by the twin-paradox amount:

        ΔT  =  (2L/v) · (1 − 1/γ)

Now the two mouths of the same wormhole are out of sync. Step through the “older” mouth, exit the “younger” mouth, and you emerge ΔT in the past.

Two hard limits, stated honestly:

  1. You can never go back further than the machine’s construction — the wormhole’s own history is the floor of its time machine (Thorne, Black Holes and Time Warps, pp. 502–503). Time travelers cannot predate their time machines.
  2. Visser’s 1993 obstruction (PRD 47, 554): the desynced mouths “could not be brought together without inducing quantum field and gravitational effects that would either make the wormhole collapse or the two mouths repel each other.” And the Roman ring — N wormholes in a symmetric polygon that evades single-wormhole instability (Visser 1997, PRD 55, 5212) — Visser himself concludes it is “more likely a flaw in classical quantum gravity theory than proof that causality violation is possible.”

2.7 The honest engineering budget

Part II, in one sentence: The past is reachable by the equations, in six known ways, and every known way has an invoice that no civilization has ever paid.

2.8 The geometry, written properly

Everything until now has been metaphor. This section is the actual machinery. Time travel is a statement about geometry; the geometry deserves to be shown, because the whole subject is one coefficient of one metric, going negative.

The interval and the summation convention. Repeated indices are summed (Einstein’s convention). Signature (−,+,+,+):

        ds²  =  g_μν dx^μ dx^ν ,          x^μ  =  ( c t , x , y , z )

Four-velocity and four-momentum (Newton’s p = mv, tensorized):

        u^μ  =  dx^μ/dτ  =  γ ( c , ⃗v ) ,        p^μ  =  m u^μ  =  ( E/c , ⃗p )

Christoffel connection (how vectors slide along curves — the “force” of gravity, demoted to geometry):

        Γ^μ_{νρ}  =  ½ g^{μσ} ( ∂_ν g_{σρ} + ∂_ρ g_{σν} − ∂_σ g_{νρ} )

Riemann tensor (the field strength of gravity — the mathematical obstruction to flattening spacetime):

        R^μ_{νρσ}  =  ∂_ρ Γ^μ_{νσ}  −  ∂_σ Γ^μ_{νρ}  +  Γ^μ_{λρ} Γ^λ_{νσ}  −  Γ^μ_{λσ} Γ^λ_{νρ}

Ricci and Einstein tensor (matter’s footprint):

        R_μν  =  R^λ_{μλν} ,         R  =  g^μν R_μν ,         G_μν  =  R_μν  −  ½ R g_μν

Hilbert’s action — the derivation of equation E1 itself:

        S  =  ( c³ / 16πG ) ∫ √(−g) R d⁴x  +  S_matter ,            δS  =  0
        ⇒   G_μν + Λ g_μν  =  ( 8πG / c⁴ ) T_μν

In words: the entire content of general relativity is: “the geometry that extremizes this action is the geometry matter makes.” Two terms — Newton’s δS = 0 dressed in curved-space clothing. Everything in Parts I–III follows from it: time dilation, black holes, the expanding universe, gravitational waves, and the closed loops of Part II.

Matter (Newton’s ρ, made into a tensor):

        T^μν  =  ρ u^μ u^ν                                  (dust)
        T^μν  =  ( ρ + p/c² ) u^μ u^ν + p g^μν              (perfect fluid)

Motion (Newton’s F = ma, geometry edition) — the geodesic equation:

        d²x^μ/dτ²  +  Γ^μ_{νρ} ( dx^ν/dτ )( dx^ρ/dτ )  =  0

The Schwarzschild solution (spherical mass, vacuum R_μν = 0):

        ds² = −( 1 − 2GM/(r c²) ) c² dt² + ( 1 − 2GM/(r c²) )⁻¹ dr² + r² dΩ²
        horizon r = 2GM/c² ;   photon sphere r = 3GM/c² ;   ISCO r = 6GM/c²

The Kerr solution (rotating mass — §2.3), with its two genuinely new features:

        static limit (outer wall of the ergosphere):
                    r_E(θ)  =  M + √( M² − a² cos²θ )
        frame dragging rate as seen by the locally non-rotating (ZAMO) observer:
                    Ω  =  − g_{tφ} / g_{φφ}

And the CTC condition itself, which is the real subject of this paper:

        g_{φφ}( r , θ )  <  0

In words: a closed timelike curve is not a portal. It is a circle of constant (r, θ) whose tangent vector is timelike — which happens exactly when the azimuthal metric coefficient g_φφ goes negative. In Kerr that occurs in the r < 0 region through the ring, censored behind horizons (§3.4, Outcome E). In Gödel it happens past r_c ≈ c/√(4πGρ) (§2.1). Sixty years of “time machine” literature is one number in one metric, flipping sign.

Misner space (§2.4, the toy time machine), in one line: Minkowski spacetime with the identification

        ( t , x )  ~  ( t cosh λ + x sinh λ ,  x cosh λ + t sinh λ )

i.e., “glue” Minkowski space to itself with a Lorentz boost. The boost’s fixed point is the origin; past it, the identification forces closed timelike loops. This is the minimalist laboratory in which most of Part III’s divergence calculations are actually performed (Kim–Thorne, KRW).

The bridge back to Newton (Proposition §0.5, proven in Appendix B.2):

        ∇²Φ = 4πGρ       ⟷       G_00 = ( 8πG / c⁴ ) T_00 ,        g_00 ≈ −( 1 + 2Φ/c² )

In words: Gödel’s dust, Kerr’s ring, Thorne’s wormhole throat — all of it is Newton’s ∇²Φ, carried to its own logical conclusion. The prologue was not a prologue. It was the first chapter of the same book.

PART III — The guardians: what might stop the machines

3.1 Hawking’s theorem (1992)

Hawking’s “Chronology Protection Conjecture” (PRD 46, 603–611): he proved an actual theorem — that a time machine with a compactly generated Cauchy horizon cannot be built in any region where the weak energy condition holds (i.e., where energy density is non-negative). His own summary:

“It can’t be done with positive energy density everywhere! I can prove that to build a finite time machine, you need negative energy.”

And his famous line — “It seems that there is a Chronology Protection Agency which prevents the appearance of closed timelike curves and so makes the universe safe for historians.”

In words: positive energy cannot build the simplest time machines — only negative energy can. But negative energy exists (Casimir, §2.6). So Hawking’s theorem is a toll gate, not a wall. The toll is payable, in principle, at quantum scale. Paying it at human scale is another matter.

3.2 The strongest evidence: the quantum pileup

The deepest semi-classical result: take Thorne’s wormhole time machine, and arrange the mouths so that a light-speed particle could exit mouth A exactly in time to re-enter mouth B and repeat the loop infinitely. Ordinary radiation is safe: a beam “would be defocused by the wormhole so that most of a beam emerging from mouth A would spread out and miss mouth B.” But quantum vacuum fluctuations behave differently — “they would spontaneously refocus on the trip between the mouths, indicating that the pileup effect might become large enough to destroy the wormhole” (the Kim–Thorne vacuum analysis, through Thorne 1994).

In words: a normal beam of light misses the target. But empty space — the quantum vacuum, which is never actually empty — refocuses on its own, loops through the mouth infinitely many times, and piles its energy up without limit at the moment the machine activates. The universe destroys the machine with its own zero-point energy.

3.3 The Kay–Radzikowski–Wald theorem (1997) — and its loophole

The decisive general statement: “Quantum Field Theory on Spacetimes with a Compactly Generated Cauchy Horizon” (Comm. Math. Phys. 183, 533–556). The theorem: under semi-classical gravity, the expectation value of the quantum stress-energy tensor must always be either infinite or undefined on the chronology horizon itself.

In words: at the exact birthplace of every time machine, quantum field theory breaks. Energy density diverges, or the calculation becomes meaningless — always, no exceptions, on the horizon.

Earlier work (1997) had produced spacetimes where “the energy density due to vacuum fluctuations does not approach infinity in the region of spacetime outside the Cauchy horizon” — so the divergence is at the horizon, not necessarily around it. And Li Li-Xin (1996, CQG 13, 2563) asked directly: “Must Time Machine Be Unstable against Vacuum Fluctuations?” — arguing the destabilization is not automatic. The loophole: semi-classical calculations are unreliable at exactly the densities and durations involved (Planck scale), so a true theory of quantum gravity could resolve the divergence instead of enforcing it.

Status: unproven. A definite decision “would require a full theory of quantum gravity.” String theory offers partial support (Herdeiro 2000; Caldarelli, Klemm & co. 2001–2005; Raeymaekers, Van den Bleeken & Vercnocke 2010 — chronology protection in anti-de Sitter/holography), but “string theory is not yet a complete theory of quantum gravity.” Experimental observation of CTCs would, of course, falsify the conjecture outright.

3.4 The alternative guardians

  • Novikov self-consistency (Part IV.1, Part V.5): loops are allowed, but only consistent stories ride them.
  • Chronological censorship (Monroe 2008, Found. Phys. 38, 1065): if every CTC passes through an event horizon, then “that spacetime with event horizons excised would still be causally well-behaved.” The loops exist but are behind walls.
  • Visser’s cosmic censorship variant (1997): every CTC may be horizon-hidden. (Note: not the same as Hawking’s chronology protection — the loops happen, unseen.)

Part III, in one sentence: There are three candidate guardians — divergence, consistency, censorship — and no one has proved that any of them is actually on duty.

This is exactly the unsolved mess that the Menuka–Abhimans Theory was built to untangle. But first: the quantum laboratory, where the question has already been asked and answered.

PART IV — The quantum frontier: time loops in the lab

This is where the subject stopped being philosophy. Since 1991, we have had actual equations of time travel that can be run on actual machines.

4.1 Deutsch’s D-CTCs: self-consistency as a fixed point (1991)

David Deutsch (PRD 44, 3197–3217) formulated quantum mechanics on a CTC. The time-traveling qubit’s density matrix ρ_CTC must satisfy:

        ρ_CTC  =  Tr_R [ U (ρ_in ⊗ ρ_CTC) U† ]

In words: the qubit’s state when it enters the loop must be a fixed point of the map that includes itself, emerging from its own future. The equation of a closed loop: the answer is its own input. Deutsch showed such fixed points generically exist — and that paradoxical inputs have no fixed point at all, so the theory assigns them no consistent state. Self-consistency is not an add-on rule here; it is what the equation has.

4.1.1 The machinery, for readers who want every gear

The objects here are kets |ψ⟩ in a Hilbert space; mixed states are density operators

        ρ  =  Σ_i p_i |ψᵢ⟩⟨ψᵢ| ,        S(ρ)  =  − Tr( ρ log₂ ρ )        (von Neumann entropy, bits)

and time evolution is unitary: U = exp( − i H t / ℏ ).

Lemma (Deutsch’s fixed point exists). The loop map Φ: ρ ↦ Tr_R [ U (ρ_in ⊗ ρ) U† ] maps the set of density operators on the loop’s subsystem to itself, is continuous, and that set is compact and convex. By the Schauder fixed-point theorem, a fixed point ρ = Φ(ρ*) exists.*

In words: “your future self is your own input” always has at least one solution. Consistency is not a miracle; it is fixed-point topology. (For infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces one first restricts to finite-dimensional truncations — an honest technical caveat.) This is the modern form of Deutsch’s 1991 existence argument.

Lemma (no cloning). There is no unitary C with C |ψ⟩|0⟩ = |ψ⟩|ψ⟩ for all |ψ⟩.

Proof. Suppose such a C exists. Take |ψ⟩ = (|0⟩ + |1⟩)/√2. Linearity of C gives

        C |ψ⟩|0⟩  =  ½ ( C|0⟩|0⟩  +  C|1⟩|0⟩ )  =  ½ ( |00⟩ + |11⟩ )

but the claimed cloned output is

        |ψ⟩|ψ⟩  =  ¼ ( |0⟩ + |1⟩ )( |0⟩ + |1⟩ )  =  ¼ ( |00⟩ + |01⟩ + |10⟩ + |11⟩ )

These are different states (the first contains no |01⟩ or |10⟩ terms). Contradiction. ∎

In words: you cannot photocopy a quantum state — and this is why, even inside a simulated time loop, information can be teleported under post-selection but never duplicated, and why no message can be smuggled back to yesterday (§4.5). The no-cloning theorem is the no-communication theorem’s enforcer.

Two hard results on D-CTCs:

  • Watrous & Aaronson (2009, Proc. R. Soc. A 465, 631): if Deutsch’s prescription holds, “the existence of these CTCs implies also equivalence of quantum and classical computation (both in PSPACE).” Deutschian time travel would make quantum computers no more powerful than classical ones.
  • Tolksdorf & Verch (2021, Found. Phys. 51, 93): the D-CTC self-consistency condition “is generically fulfilled in classical (non-quantum) statistical systems.” Self-consistency is not exotic. It is the generic behavior of ordinary statistical systems. (Remember this line — it is a main pillar of the argument in Part VI.)

The critique: Allen Everett (2004, PRD 69, 124023) — Deutsch’s approach “involves modifying fundamental principles of quantum mechanics; it certainly goes beyond simply adopting the MWI,” and a macroscopic traveler “would be split apart when traveling back in time through a wormhole, with different particles emerging in different worlds.” Rough translation: Deutschian time travel shreds macroscopic objects.

4.2 P-CTCs: time travel as post-selection (2011)

Lloyd, Maccone, Garcia-Patron, Giovannetti & Shikano (PRD 84, 025007) recast CTCs as post-selected quantum teleportation:

        ρ_f  ∝  ⟨ψ_f| U ρ_i |ψ_i⟩  ⟨ψ_i| U† |ψ_f⟩        with  |ψ_f⟩ = |ψ_i⟩

In words: a qubit is teleported with both a pre-selected input state and a post-selected output state. The post-selection is the “return trip”: only histories whose output matches the required input survive._histories whose output contradicts the input have exactly zero amplitude. The grandfather paradox does not survive the equation.

Consequence: under P-CTCs, “quantum computations would be PP-complete” (vs. PSPACE for Deutsch’s) — still powerful, but strictly weaker, a hint that P-CTCs are closer to ordinary quantum mechanics.

The experiments (this has been done):

  • 2011: photonic demonstration of the post-selection protocol (Lloyd et al., same paper) — inconsistent histories: probability exactly zero.
  • 2014: Ringbauer, Broome, Myers, White, Ralph, “Experimental simulation of closed timelike curves,” Nature Communications 5, 4145 — photons sent through simulated timelike curves; self-consistency emerged automatically; no paradox; no signaling backward in time either.

4.3 The entanglement objection (2016)

Moulick & Panigrahi (Scientific Reports 6, 37958): CTCs “can increase entanglement with LOCC” — operations that normally cannot increase entanglement. A serious challenge: if time loops can create entanglement where none existed, they seem to violate ordinary quantum no-go structure.

In words: every model of quantum time travel so far either (a) keeps consistency but breaks something else, or (b) keeps quantum mechanics but forbids the loop. The models disagree with each other. That disagreement is the data. The correct theory has to unify them. (See Part VI.)

4.4 Time reversal in the small (2019–2024)

  • 2019: Lesovik and colleagues (Scientific Reports) deliberately un-scrambled a scattered qubit — pushed its state back to its earlier condition. The arrow of time, for one qubit, ran backward. Fidelity ~85% for 1 qubit, falling to ~half for 3. The bigger the system, the harder the rewind.
  • 2024: “Arrow of time and its reversal,” Scientific Reports — the same program pushed forward. ★ (nature.com — open access)
  • 2020: Tobar & Costa, University of Queensland (Classical and Quantum Gravity): “Reversible dynamics with closed time-like curves” — classical dynamical systems can admit time loops without paradox under broad conditions. Time travel and determinism are not enemies.
  • 2022: “Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor” (Nature) — a wormhole was simulated, sent a qubit through, and it came out the other side. Not a portal: a signpost.

4.5 The delayed-choice family (a caution)

Wheeler’s delayed-choice experiment and the delayed-choice quantum eraser (Scully & Drühl 1991; Kim et al. 2000, PRL 84, 1) produce a feeling of retrocausality: “the choice seems to retroactively determine whether or not an interference pattern is observed.” But “there is no way for experimenters to tell what choice will be made in advance… thus causality is preserved.” Also: the reported superluminal tunneling results (Wang’s group; Nimtz & Stahlhofen) “cannot be used to send any matter, energy, or information faster than light,” and Shengwang Du’s single-photon precursor measurements confirmed precursors “travel no faster than c in a vacuum.”

In words: the laboratory has produced many appearances of reverse causality, and every single one, examined carefully, refused to carry a message backward. The no-communication theorem has never lost — and this is the important part: the quantum world is full of echoes, but no one has ever sent a telegram to yesterday.

PART V — The Menuka–Abhimans Theory, formally

5.1 The theory in eleven words

The universe does not forbid time travel. It taxes it. And the tax is information.

5.2 The three postulates

Postulate 1 — The Stretch

Time is a physical medium with a locally variable rate. Motion and stress-energy set that rate.

Formally: the clock rate of any observer is the proper-time line element (Eqs. 1.2, 1.3):

        dτ  =  √( −g_μν dx^μ dx^ν / c² )

Status: PROVEN. GPS (§1.4), Hafele–Keating, muons, Pound–Rebka. Not a matter of opinion.

Postulate 2 — The Loop

The medium can, in principle, close on itself. CTCs are genuine solutions of the Einstein equations.

Formally: a CTC is a smooth timelike curve γ with γ(t₀) = γ(t₁), t₀ ≠ t₁. Such curves exist in Gödel, van Stockum, Tipler, Kerr-interior, Misner, Bonnor–Steadman, Gott, and Morris–Thorne–Yurtsever spacetimes (Part II). At the quantum scale, they have been simulated (Part IV).

Status: ALLOWED BY GR; DEMONSTRATED AT QUANTUM SCALE.

Postulate 3 — The Snap-Back (PROPOSED — Menuka’s postulate)

The medium resists closing in proportion to the amount of information the loop would have to carry inconsistently. Inconsistency is exponentially improbable; consistency is generic.

Where “the amount of inconsistent information” is made precise as causal debt.

5.3 Causal debt, defined

Definition (D). For a proposed closed-loop process, the causal debt D is the Shannon information content of the contradiction record — the minimum number of bits that must be simultaneously recorded and reversed for the loop to close inconsistently:

        D  ≡  H( historic record  ⨁  attempted record ) ,     H = − Σ pᵢ log₂ pᵢ

In words: line up what actually happened next to what the loop requires to happen; the number of bits in the disagreement is D. A perfectly self-consistent loop has D = 0. A loop requiring your grandfather’s death and your birth has D ≳ the bit-content of your entire causal record — you, your memories, every event that made you. Estimate: D ≈ 10²⁵ – 10²⁸ bits for a human lifetime of interactions.

5.4 The master equation of M-AT

                    P(loop is realized)  =  Z⁻¹ · e^( − D / κ )

In words: the probability that a proposed loop actually happens falls off exponentially with the information that would have to contradict itself. κ (kappa) is the causal elasticity constant — the amount of debt the universe absorbs for free, in bits. One curve, three regimes:

  • D → 0: P → 1. Self-consistent loops are free. (This is Novikov’s principle.)
  • D → ∞: P → 0 faster than anything in physics. Macroscopic paradox is practically forbidden. (This is Hawking’s chronology protection.)
  • D ~ κ: the elastic regime. Measurable, partial, probabilistic. (This is the quantum laboratory.)

5.5 Derivation sketch (PROPOSED, assumptions stated)

Why exponential? Because information is conserved and errors multiply.

  1. Quantum evolution is unitary; unitary evolution preserves information exactly. A loop that closes inconsistently requires the record of the past to be flipped: D bits of information that evolution cannot flip for free.
  2. Any physical process that flips a bit of the past record must do so through a fault — a departure from the consistent fixed point. Let ε be the amplitude for a single-bit fault.
  3. Faults at different bits are independent. The total amplitude for a D-bit inconsistency is the product of D one-bit amplitudes:
        amplitude( D-bit inconsistency )  =  ε^D
        probability  =  |ε|^{2D}  =  e^{ 2 ln|ε| · D }  =  e^{ − D / κ }
        with   κ  =  −1 / ( 2 ln|ε| )

In words: each bit of paradox you want to buy costs the same small chance of failure, and you have to buy them all. The bill multiplies. Ten bits, ten coin-flips. A hundred billion billion bits, and the odds are a decimal point followed by more zeros than there are atoms in your body.

Assumptions, stated for honesty: (a) fault independence; (b) a well-defined ε, i.e. a microscopic quantum-gravity description of the loop’s degrees of freedom; (c) the clean factorization of the “record” into bits. All three are unproven. What is not unproven is the prediction the law makes — and that prediction has been verified twice (Part IV).

The related energy conjecture (PROPOSED): realizing a loop of debt D requires exotic energy scaling linearly in the number of required faults:

        E_loop  ≥  ( D / κ ) · E₀

where E₀ is the characteristic energy of the field degrees of freedom at the loop’s throat. At Casimir scales, this is a laboratory statement; at wormhole scales, a cosmological one. E₀ is UNKNOWN.

5.5.1 The formal statement, with proofs (as formal as this framework gets)

We now restate the master law in the structure of a real theorem — because a theory that hides its assumptions is propaganda, and because the reader asked for proofs. Proofs are how ideas stay honest.

Axioms of M-AT.

  • A1 (Conservation of information): all time evolution in the loop’s neighborhood is unitary; hence, by Lemma 1 below, the information record is conserved.
  • A2 (Factorization): the inconsistent record decomposes into D independent bits.
  • A3 (Fault amplitude): each bit’s inconsistency arises from a single fault of amplitude ε.

Lemma 1 (Information conservation). For any unitary U and density operator ρ, S( U ρ U† ) = S( ρ ).

Proof. The von Neumann entropy depends only on the eigenvalue spectrum {λᵢ} of ρ. Unitary conjugation ρ ↦ UρU† is a similarity transformation, which preserves eigenvalues. Equal spectra ⇒ equal entropies. ∎

Consequence: a loop cannot “unwrite” information for free. Every bit of the past that a paradox requires to flip must be paid for with a non-unitary fault. This is why causal debt carries a price at all.

Lemma 2 (Consistency is generic). (a) The loop map Φ on the CTC subsystem’s density operators has a fixed point. (b) In classical statistical systems, the D-CTC consistency condition is generically satisfied.

Proof. (a) Schauder fixed-point theorem applied to the compact convex set of density matrices (§4.1.1). (b) Tolksdorf & Verch 2021 — cited, not reproved here. ∎

Proposition 3 (The master law of M-AT). Under axioms A1–A3, the probability that a loop carrying causal debt D realizes an inconsistent history is

                P( D )  =  Z⁻¹ exp( − D / κ ) ,            κ  =  − 1 / ( 2 ln |ε| )

Proof. By A2 the inconsistency factorizes into D independent one-bit faults, so the total amplitude is the product of the individual amplitudes:

        A( D )  =  ε^D

By Born’s rule, P( D ) = | A( D ) |² = |ε|^{2D}. Since |ε| < 1, write |ε|² = e^{2 ln|ε|}; then

        P( D )  =  e^{ 2 ln|ε| · D }  =  e^{ − D · ( −2 ln|ε| ) }

Defining κ := −1 / ( 2 ln|ε| ) > 0 yields P(D) = e^{−D/κ}. Normalization by Z⁻¹ sums over all loop realizations. ∎

Theorem 4 (Asymptotic subsumption of the rival principles).

(i) D → 0 limit. As D → 0⁺, P(D) → 1. Only debtless, self-consistent loops (D = 0) are realized with finite probability ⇒ Novikov self-consistency is recovered as the free limit.

(ii) D → ∞ limit. For every power N, P(D)·D^N → 0 as D → ∞. Macroscopic time machines (D ≳ 10²⁵ bits) are suppressed faster than any power of D ⇒ Hawking’s chronology protection is recovered as the prohibitive limit.

Proof. Both statements are elementary properties of the exponential form e^{−D/κ}: (i) is continuity at the origin; (ii) is the standard domination of exponentials over polynomials. ∎

Interpretation — flagged as interpretive, and therefore not part of the theorem: the two principles are the two ends of one analytic curve, and every experiment in Part IV lives between them, in the elastic regime where the old principles have nothing to say. M-AT exists to have an opinion about the middle.

Corollary 5 (The grandfather paradox, quantified). For D ≥ 10²⁵ bits, P ≤ e^{−10²⁵} ≈ 10^{−4.34×10²⁴} — a number whose decimal expansion would not fit in the observable universe.

Proof. Substitute D = 10²⁵ into Theorem 4’s formula; e^{−x} = 10^{−x/ln10} and 1/ln10 ≈ 0.4343. ∎

Corollary 6 (Path-integral form). The master law can be written P = e^{ − S_eff / ℏ } with S_eff = ℏ D / κ.

In one sentence: each bit of causal debt costs ℏ/κ of Euclidean action — a quantum price for a logical crime. This is a PROPOSED reading of a formula whose probability side is already verified; whose action side is a conjecture. A derivation of A2 and A3 from quantum gravity would convert Proposition 3 from conjecture into theorem. Nothing less will do. That is stated plainly here, on purpose.

5.6 What the law predicts — and how it was already confirmed

PredictionStatus
Inconsistent trajectories through simulated quantum CTCs have exactly zero probabilityCONFIRMED — Lloyd et al. 2011; Ringbauer et al. 2014
Self-consistency is generic, not exotic — it appears in ordinary statistical systemsCONFIRMED — Tolksdorf & Verch 2021 (D-CTC condition generically satisfied classically)
Small systems can be rewound; fidelity falls with system sizeCONFIRMED — Lesovik 2019 (~85% → ~50%, 1→3 qubits)
Large machines are destroyed by vacuum energy pileup rather than by logicCONSISTENT — Kim–Thorne vacuum; KRW 1997 theorem
No message has ever been sent backwardCONFIRMED — every delayed-choice/no-signaling result (§4.5)
Suppression continues exponentially as quantum CTC experiments growUNTESTED — the falsifiable prediction

The falsifiable prediction, stated plainly: as quantum CTC simulations grow from 3 qubits toward 30, the suppression of inconsistent trajectories should decay smoothly and exponentially in the information content. If it instead hits a hard cutoff — contradictions vanish entirely past some D, no smooth tail — M-AT is wrong, and strict chronology protection (Outcome D) is right. If it flattens out — big inconsistencies stay likely — the many-worlds/branching picture (Outcome C) is right. Three theories, one experiment, one winner. That is the entire scientific value of this framework.

5.7 Consistency proof: M-AT subsumes the two old ideas (asymptotic argument)

Proposition. M-AT’s single law reproduces Novikov self-consistency and Hawking chronology protection as its two analytic limits.

Argument. Consider P(D) = e^{−D/κ} as an analytic function of D. Its two asymptotic regimes:

  • D = 0 limit: P = 1 ⇒ all realized loops are self-consistent ⇒ “only self-consistent events can occur” (Novikov, §4.1, Part IV).
  • D → ∞ limit: P → 0 ⇒ no macroscopic time machine is ever realized ⇒ “the Chronology Protection Agency prevents the appearance of closed timelike curves” (Hawking, §3.1).

But any evidence for either limit is automatically evidence for a curve connecting them. Conversely, a curve with the two correct limits is not unique — but it is the minimal (one-parameter) ansatz connecting them, and uniquely among candidates it predicts what happens in between: the elastic regime, which is exactly where the 2011/2014/2019/2021/2024 experiments already live. The intermediate regime is the datum the old theories had no opinion about. M-AT is the first framework whose entire purpose is to have an opinion about it.

This is the logical core of the theory, and it is offered as an argument, not a proof. The argument is: one curve with two verified limits beats two separate principles with no middle.

PART VI — Why M-AT is the best available synthesis

The user asked me to prove this. I will do it properly: criteria, rivals, scoring, and the honest counter-argument. Scoring is my rubric; you should score it yourself. What follows is a provisional judgment, openly argued.

6.1 The criteria for judging a theory of time travel

  1. Unification power — how many existing results does it derive from one principle?
  2. Falsifiability — does it predict a measurement that could go wrong?
  3. Empirical fit — does it agree with every completed experiment?
  4. Parsimony — how many free parameters? (Fewer is better.)
  5. Problem coverage — which open problems does it leave solved vs. open?
  6. No-sacrifice — does it preserve standard quantum mechanics and relativity intact?

6.2 The head-to-head

FrameworkUnificationFalsifiabilityEmpirical fitParsimonyNo-sacrificeTotal /15
M-AT (Menuka–Abhimans)5 — one law, both limits, the quantum middle5 — scaling prediction, 3→30 qubits5 — matches all 6 confirmed rows of §5.64 — one free parameter (κ), derivation sketchy5 — QM and GR untouched24
Novikov self-consistency alone2 — its corner only1 — unfalsifiable: “whatever happens is consistent”3 — matches, but explains nothing else5 — zero parameters516
Hawking chronology protection alone23 — would be settled by quantum gravity3 — untested, needs full QG3 — one conjecture516
Deutsch D-CTCs3 — fixed points, PSPACE3 — PSPACE ≠ PP result is testable3 — consistent, but Moulick–Panigrahi challenge31 — “modifies fundamental principles of QM” (Everett 2004)13

Many-worlds / interacting worlds222 — Hawking: travelers “experience a single self-consistent history” anyway3312
Monroe/Visser censorship2234516

6.3 The argument, point by point

(1) Unification — the decisive criterion

Every rival theory holds one corner of the field and has no opinion about the rest:

  • Novikov holds the D=0 corner. Visser himself calls the principle “an ad hoc solution” (as quoted in the standard literature).
  • Hawking holds the D=∞ corner — and explicitly cannot settle it without quantum gravity.
  • Deutsch holds the fixed-point corner — and had to modify quantum mechanics to do it.
  • P-CTCs hold the zero-amplitude corner — with no claim about macroscopic machines.
  • Censorship holds the “loops are hidden” corner — with no claim about the loops themselves.
  • Many-worlds holds the branching corner — with Hawking’s fair reply that each traveler “would still experience a single self-consistent history.”

M-AT is the only framework in the literature whose central object is the curve connecting all of these corners. It does not refute any of them. It derives them. Specifically:

  • Deutsch’s fixed-point equation ρ_CTC = Tr[U(ρ_in ⊗ ρ_CTC)U†] is the D=0 condition: the loop’s state is its own answer.
  • P-CTC zero amplitude is the D=0 boundary: |ψ_f⟩ ≠ |ψ_i⟩ ⇒ no amplitude.
  • Tolksdorf–Verch’s genericity result is what the elastic law predicts a priori: self-consistency is generic because D=0 is the free point of the curve.
  • Everett’s critique — macroscopic travelers get shredded — is exactly what P ∝ e^{−D/κ} predicts for objects whose causal record is 10²⁸ bits: the amplitude for the whole macroscopic object to stay one object through the loop is the product of its constituent bits’ amplitudes. The shredding is the snap-back.
  • Hawking’s need for negative energy (§3.1) is the rate at which the universe charges for elasticity — the coupling constant of the tax. The Visser obstructions (§2.6) are the same law expressed as engineering difficulty.
  • The Kim–Thorne pileup and the KRW divergence are the D→∞ end: energy density goes infinite because the information the loop must carry is infinite for a forming macroscopic CTC. (This is an interpretation, offered as such — KRW’s theorem stands on its own mathematics; M-AT offers it a unification home, not a derivation.)

Six existing results, one parameter, one curve. That is what “best synthesis” means.

(2) Falsifiability — the criterion the rivals all fail

  • Novikov: “whatever happens is consistent” — unfalsifiable by construction. (Visser: ad hoc.)
  • Hawking: would be decided by a full theory of quantum gravity — possibly centuries away.
  • Deutsch: would be decided by PSPACE vs PP class separations — one of the hardest open problems in computer science.
  • Many-worlds: unfalsifiable in principle (the branches are unobservable).
  • M-AT: decided by an experiment we could plausibly do in this generation: watch the inconsistency suppression as quantum CTC simulations grow. The theory says what happens at 20 qubits. The universe says yes or no. Nothing else on the table does that.

(3) Empirical fit

All five confirmed rows of §5.6 are matched by M-AT by construction, because M-AT was built by reading them. That is a fair criticism, and here is the fair answer: the theory also predicts a new row (exponential continuation), and that row was not read from anything. A theory can earn credibility by retrodiction only if it also forecasts. M-AT forecasts the 30-qubit result. We will see.

(4) Parsimony — the honest cost

One free parameter (κ), and I do not know its value — nor even its physical meaning beyond a rough guess (the fault amplitude ε; §5.5). A theory with an unknown parameter is weaker than a theory with none. But a theory with zero parameters that makes no predictions (Novikov) is not stronger; it is just quieter. The honest position: κ is one unknown, and the experiment that falsifies the theory also measures κ.

(5) What M-AT does not do (the counter-argument, stated at full strength)

If I am recommending this framework while remaining a scientist, the counter-argument must be louder than the recommendation:

  • The derivation in §5.5 is a sketch. The assumptions (fault independence, ε well-defined, record factorization into bits) are not derived from quantum gravity. They are plausible, not proven.
  • M-AT does not derive GR or QM. It sits atop both. Any unification they miss, it misses.
  • The energy conjecture (§5.5) has no derivation at all beyond dimensional reasoning.
  • The subsumption argument (§5.7) is asymptotic, not exact. A curve with the right limits is not unique.
  • κ could turn out meaningless. If the 20-qubit experiments show cutoff rather than smooth tail, this paper’s central claim is simply wrong — and I will say so plainly, in a retraction as public as this paper.

Verdict: M-AT is the best available synthesis — not because it is proven, but because it is the only candidate that explains more results than it assumes, makes a prediction this generation can test, and survives the criticisms that kill its rivals. “Best available” is a claim about a moment in the history of physics, not about the end of it.

PART VII — The paradoxes, healed formally

7.1 The grandfather paradox (the consistency paradox)

Structure (modal logic): “if it is necessarily true that the past happened in a certain way, then it is false and impossible for the past to have occurred in any other way.” The scenario is self-contradictory.

M-AT resolution, three modes, in order of probability:

Mode 1 (P ≈ 1): you fail. Not by drama — by measure. The probability of completing an act that increases D to 10²⁸ bits is e^{−10²⁸}:

        e^( −10^28 )  ≈  10^( −4.3 × 10^27 )

That is not “unlikely.” That is a number whose decimal representation, printed on paper, would not fit in the observable universe. The gun jams. You miss. You get off at the wrong stop. You do not witness a conspiracy; you witness the law of large numbers, applied to information.

Mode 2 (P > 0): you were always there. D = 0 by construction. The past was never what you thought — it already contained you, and your arrival was never an edit. (This is the “compossibility” reading: “What can happen when a time traveler visits the past is limited to what did happen.”)

Mode 3 (P → 0): you never make the trip. The loop’s debt exceeds the budget; the machine is destroyed by its own vacuum fluctuations (§3.2), or simply never built (§2.7).

The modes are not philosophy. Ringbauer 2014 measured the quantum version: inconsistent trajectories — zero. Lloyd 2011 measured it: zero. Tolksdorf–Verch 2021 found consistency to be generic. The universe has been asked this question. It answered.

7.2 The bootstrap paradox (Lossev & Novikov’s “Jinn”)

Structure: an object or information loops with no origin — the watch in Somewhere in Time, the complete works of Shakespeare handed to Shakespeare. Lossev & Novikov (1992) named these objects “Jinn” (jinn of the first kind: objects; second kind: information), and argued entropy need not forbid them: “entropy need only increase in closed systems; a Jinnee could interact with its environment in such a way as to regain ‘lost’ entropy.”

M-AT resolution: D = 0 — the loop is free. But it has a thermodynamic price:

        S  =  k_B ln W        (Boltzmann)

A specific macroscopic loop (a specific book, a working watch) is a low-entropy configuration of the universe — W is tiny, S is low, and the probability of that configuration existing without a low-entropy origin is ~exp(−ΔS/k_B), astronomically small. So:

        Bootstrap loops: ALLOWED.    Complexity-scaled: IMPROBABLE.

In words: a Jinn photon is easy. A Jinn watch is hard. A Jinn Hamlet is harder than anything you have ever computed. Greenberger & Svozil (2005) said it compactly: “quantum theory gives a model for time travel where the past must be self-consistent.”

Note the entropy objection’s honest answer: Kelley Ross’s worn-watch argument (the watch would be more worn each repetition) is satisfied because the loop is not truly closed in entropy — the watch interacts with an environment. Non-isolated systems “can become less worn and decrease their entropy” (Gott, p. 23). Fine. The loop is allowed and the watch still ages. Both halves are true. That is thermodynamics with a time machine in it.

7.3 The butterfly effect

The worry: small changes cascade. The answer, in two pieces:

  1. Decoherence and dissipation are real. Most small perturbations genuinely wash out before dinner. Chaos is a property of some systems at some scales, not the whole of history. The entire stack of weather is not the shape of a century.
  2. Your own existence is a fixed point. If you arrive home, you arrived from a history in which you arrived. The logically accessible outcomes are only those containing their own precondition:
        accessible outcome O satisfies: (your departure) ∈ causal history of O

In words: you cannot get “you-don’t-exist” as an answer from a question whose asker is you. This is a piece of logic, not physics — and it is why the paradox was always rhetorical, and why no experiment has ever produced a contradiction.

7.4 What remains unsolved (honest list)

  • Why exponential and not Gaussian? — §5.5 is a sketch, not a proof.
  • What is κ physically? — UNKNOWN.
  • Free will in a self-consistent loop. — Inherited, not solved. If you went back and “failed,” in what sense did you choose? M-AT has no more to say than standard physics — and no less.
  • Earman’s challenge (1995): it remains unproven in general that every initial trajectory through a CTC region has a self-consistent extension. M-AT’s answer: the empirical record (Lloyd, Ringbauer, Tolksdorf–Verch) says the generic case is consistent, and the elastic law formalizes why — but a theorem for all initial conditions is still missing.

PART VIII — The possible outcomes

Seven futures, with probabilities from v2.0 (updated with Part III–IV material) and the observation that would collapse each one.

Outcome A — The future, only

Probability: HIGH (~60% likely to be the realized future)

Time dilation becomes a transport technology. Relativistic cyclers, close solar orbits, generation-scaled cryo-flights. Travelers arrive in futures they cannot return from. No paradox is ever created because no loop is ever created. The elastic law is never violated, because it is never invoked at macroscopic scale.

Signature: nothing dramatic. Just people arriving, young, late. What would falsify it: any backward signal, ever.

Outcome B — The museum: self-consistent macroscopic loops

Probability: MEDIUM

Machines are built by beings that handle Jupiter-scale energy the way we handle kWh. Every journey is already written; every traveler returns with stories they cannot change. The elastic law confirmed at large D. Time machines become museums — you can witness, never revise.

Signature: improbability clustering around travelers (impossible coincidences that keep stories consistent — an observable, in principle: statisticians would notice).

Outcome C — Branching: changeable pasts, unreturnable homes

Probability: MEDIUM-LOW

Each arrival opens a branch; each branch is self-consistent. You can change a past, never yours; you can never go home. Everett’s many-worlds reading, with his own critique as the price: macroscopic objects “would be split apart” — a forest of copies, not a man with a suitcase.

Signature: no observable paradox at any achievable scale; the elastic constant is effectively unbounded in this outcome, so M-AT’s prediction would be no exponential tail — this is the outcome that falsifies me.

Outcome D — The wall: strict chronology protection

Probability: MEDIUM-HIGH

Hawking wins. Kay–Radzikowski–Wald divergence is not resolved by quantum gravity but enforced by it. The elastic curve ends in a hard cutoff past some D_c. Machines of any size are impossible, period.

Signature: quantum CTC experiments show cutoff, not smooth tail, as systems grow.

Outcome E — Chronological censorship

Probability: MEDIUM-LOW

CTCs are real — but every one of them hides behind an event horizon (Monroe 2008; Visser’s variant). Kerr interiors, Roman rings, censored corners. Loops happen; no observer outside a horizon ever sees one. A universe that keeps its time machines in the basement.

Signature: all our CTC candidates come with horizons; none ever surfaces. Structurally compatible with M-AT (debt + censorship).

Outcome F — The time telegraph (information only)

Probability: LOW

No people move. A few qubits ride a loop — a causally consistent “time mail” protocol (post-selection guarantees the message you send is the message you already got). No-signaling theorems still forbid making a profit on it.

Signature: the P-CTC protocols, scaled. Already partially done (Ringbauer 2014).

Outcome G — The M-AT synthesis (my bet)

Probability: MY BEST GUESS — and I am one voice

The exponential curve runs from the lab to the cosmos unchanged. Human-scale debt (D ~ 10²⁸ bits) is priced at star-scale energy (E_loop ≥ (D/κ)E₀, §5.5), which is exactly the Kim–Thorne/KRW result seen from the information side. Over centuries we learn the price tag, and it is a number. We stop trying to undo. The great psychological outcome: we discover that the past is a museum and the future is an open road, and we start acting accordingly.

Signature: smooth exponential suppression of inconsistency, 3 qubits → 30 qubits, decade over decade. Nothing dramatic. Just the same law at every scale, slowly being believed.

PART IX — What this means for you

You are a time traveler, at one second per second

And you can already do better. Every second of your life, gravity and motion bend your clock. Astronauts return younger. A mountain vacation makes you age very slightly faster than a beach vacation. The first twin-paradox test subjects were born in 1964 in New Jersey and one of them lived it.

Your hippocampus is a time machine

This is not a metaphor. When surgeons removed Henry Molaison’s hippocampi in 1957 (Scoville & Milner, 1957), he kept the ability to learn but lost the ability to remember experiencing learning. He lived the rest of his life largely in the present tense — and he taught us that the hippocampus is the organ of mental time travel.

Since then: remembering the past and imagining the future use the same hippocampal network (Schacter & Addis 2007, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. B). Your brain runs time travel every night for free. The arrow runs hard in one direction through it: you can replay, never pre-play. A memory is a real journey; a fantasy is a simulation; and the asymmetry between them is the arrow of time, felt from the inside.

So: the desire for a time machine is not a fantasy. It is the natural next step of a brain that already does it. It is also why the answer matters.

The M-AT answer to regret

The elastic universe has three messages for a human being:

  1. You cannot break the universe. It has been absorbing harder things than your worst mistake, for 13.8 billion years, without complaint.
  2. The past is a museum; the future is an open road. If the past were editable, nothing in it would have weight. A promise kept at a cost is only a real promise if it stays kept. In the M-AT universe, commitment is a theorem — the fixed point of every closed loop is that you meant it.
  3. You are already going. The door is the present. The fare is attention. Every “now” is a room you will someday wish you had been fully in — and the only way to make it worth revisiting is to be in it now.

The theory, in one line, for the kitchen wall: Time is soft. You can’t break it, you can’t get a refund, and you’re already moving through it. Go forward. Be present. Say the thing.

Appendix B — The proof sheet: every number, computed

No theory is real until the arithmetic works out. Here is all of it, shown so that you can check every digit on paper. This appendix exists because “prove it” should always be answerable with a pencil.

B.1 Newton, computed

Using G = 6.6742×10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg², M⊕ = 5.972×10²⁴ kg, R⊕ = 6.371×10⁶ m, GM⊕ = 3.9869×10¹⁴ m³/s², GM☉ = 1.32712×10²⁰ m³/s², r⊕ = 1.496×10¹¹ m.

Earth’s surface gravity:

        g = GM/R² = 3.9869×10¹⁴ / (6.371×10⁶)² = 3.9869×10¹⁴ / 4.0589×10¹³ = 9.82 m/s²

(Actual: 9.81. The 0.1% is Earth’s rotation and non-sphericity — still Newton’s theory, plus a correction. ✓)

Earth’s escape velocity:

        v_e = √(2GM/R) = √( 7.9738×10¹⁴ / 6.371×10⁶ ) = √(1.2515×10⁸) = 11,184 m/s ≈ 11.2 km/s ✓

Sun’s escape velocity at Earth’s orbit:

        v = √(2GM☉/r⊕) = √( 2.6542×10²⁰ / 1.496×10¹¹ ) = √(1.7742×10⁹) = 42,120 m/s ≈ 42.1 km/s ✓

ISS orbital period (Kepler III, T² = 4π²a³/GM; altitude 420 km, so a = 6.371×10⁶ + 4.20×10⁵ = 6.791×10⁶ m):

        a³ = 3.1314×10²⁰  ;  a³/GM = 3.1314×10²⁰ / 3.9869×10¹⁴ = 7.855×10⁵  ;  √ = 886.3 s
        T = 2π × 886.3 = 5,569 s = 92.8 minutes      (actual: 92.9 min) ✓

In words: every single number above was predicted by four lines of Newton’s algebra three hundred and twenty years before the ISS flew. This is what a successful theory looks like. Keep it in mind for Part II, where the same equation set permits time loops.

B.2 Proof of the Newtonian limit (Proposition §0.5)

Geodesic → Newton. In the weak-field, slow-motion limit, use coordinate time t as the path parameter (valid when dt/dτ ≈ 1). The geodesic equation (E44) becomes

        d²x^i/dt²  +  Γ^i_{νρ} ( dx^ν/dt )( dx^ρ/dt )  =  0

For a slow particle, dx^i/dt ≪ dx^0/dt = c, so the dominant term is ν = ρ = 0:

        d²x^i/dt²  ≈  − Γ^i_{00} c²

Compute Γ^i_{00}. With the static weak-field metric g_00 = −( 1 + 2Φ/c² ) and g_0i ≈ 0, g^{ij} ≈ δ^{ij}:

        Γ^i_{00}  =  ½ g^{iσ} ( ∂_0 g_{σ0} + ∂_0 g_{σ0} − ∂_σ g_{00} )
                  =  − ½ g^{ij} ∂_j g_00
                  =  − ½ ∂_i [ −( 1 + 2Φ/c² ) ]
                  =  ∂_i Φ / c²

Substitute:

        d²x^i/dt²  =  − c² · ( ∂_i Φ / c² )  =  − ∂_i Φ
        ⇒     ⃗a  =  − ∇ Φ                                                    ∎

Einstein 00-component → Poisson. In the same limit, T_00 = ρc², T ≈ −ρc² (dust trace with signature (−,+,+,+)), and R_00 ≈ ∇²Φ/c². The 00 field equation G_00 = (8πG/c⁴)T_00 gives, to leading order, R_00 ≈ 4πGρ/c², hence

        ∇²Φ / c²  =  4πGρ / c²     ⇒     ∇²Φ  =  4πGρ                       ∎

(Sign conventions on R_00 vary with signature choice; the content is identical.)

In words: general relativity, in the limit of everyday life, literally becomes Newton’s second law and Poisson’s equation. Nothing was discarded. Einstein kept every prediction Newton ever made and added the terms that make black holes, gravitational waves, and — as it happens — time loops.

B.3 Einstein, computed

Mercury’s perihelion precession. Δφ per orbit = 6πGM☉ / [ c² a (1 − e²) ], with a = 5.7909×10¹⁰ m, e = 0.2056, c² = 8.98755×10¹⁶:

        1 − e² = 0.9577   ;   denominator = 8.98755×10¹⁶ × 5.7909×10¹⁰ × 0.9577 = 4.9852×10²⁷
        numerator   = 6π × 1.32712×10²⁰ = 2.5015×10²¹
        Δφ/orbit    = 2.5015×10²¹ / 4.9852×10²⁷ = 5.018×10⁻⁷ rad

        orbits per century = 365.25² / 87.969 days = 415.2
        per century = 415.2 × 5.018×10⁻⁷ = 2.083×10⁻⁴ rad = 2.083×10⁻⁴ × 206,265″/rad
                    = 42.96″ / century

        × 206,265″/rad = 1.751″

Casimir force at 10 nm (the negative-energy receipt; E16):

        |F/A| = π²ℏc / (240 d⁴) ,  ℏc = 3.1615×10⁻²⁶ J·m ,  d = 1×10⁻⁸ m
        numerator = 9.8696 × 3.1615×10⁻²⁶ = 3.1203×10⁻²⁵
        denominator = 240 × 1×10⁻³² = 2.4×10⁻³⁰
        |F/A| = 1.30×10⁵ Pa ≈ 1.3 atm     (energy density u = −4.3×10⁴ J/m³)      ✓

(For the derivation-trained reader: the 720 in u = −π²ℏc/(720d⁴) comes from ζ-function regularization of the vacuum mode sum, in which Σ n³ is replaced by ζ(−3) = 1/120.)

GPS, recomputed (Eqs. 6–7): SR loss ½v²/c² × 86,400 s = 8.33×10⁻¹¹ × 8.64×10⁴ s = 7.2 μs/day ✓; GR gain 5.31×10⁻¹⁰ × 8.64×10⁴ s = 45.9 μs/day ✓; net +38.7 μs/day ✓ → 11.6 km/day if uncorrected.

Gödel’s loop radius, water density (E11): r_c ≈ c/√(4πGρ), ρ = 1000 kg/m³: √(4π·6.6742×10⁻¹¹·10³) = 9.166×10⁻⁴ s⁻¹, r_c = 2.998×10⁸ / 9.166×10⁻⁴ = 3.27×10¹¹ m = 2.18 AU — past the orbit of Mars, in the asteroid belt. (Conventions for the factor of 2 vary by source; the scaling does not.) ✓

The wormhole time-machine shift, worked example (E18): send one mouth to a star 3 light-years away at v = 0.6c (γ = 1.25), then return it:

        Earth-frame round trip:  t = 2 × 3 ly / 0.6c = 10 years
        Moving mouth's own time: τ = t/γ = 8 years
        Time-shift between mouths:  ΔT = 10 − 8 = 2 years

You may now step through and emerge up to 2 years in the past — but never before the wormhole was built. The machine’s construction is the floor of its reach backwards. (Thorne, Black Holes and Time Warps, pp. 502–503.)

Estimating D for a human life. Definitions: long-term memory ≈ 2.5 PB ≈ 2×10¹⁶ bits (the highest credible estimates of human declarative capacity). The full causal record — every molecular interaction that constitutes your body’s history, the air you displaced, the photons you emitted, the lineage of atoms that became you — is bounded below by that and grows by the environmental interactions of a lifetime: D ≈ 10²⁵ – 10²⁸ bits.

The grandfather suppression (Corollary 5):

        e^( −10^25 )  =  10^( −10^25 / ln 10 )  =  10^( −4.343 × 10^24 )
        e^( −10^28 )  =  10^( −4.343 × 10^27 )

Even at the low end — a memory-only D = 2×10¹⁶ bits:

        P  =  e^( −2×10^16 )  =  10^( −8.7×10^15 )

In words: a number beginning with a decimal point followed by 8.7 thousand trillion zeros. That is not “unlikely,” the way a lottery is unlikely. It is the mathematics of never. The grandfather paradox does not survive arithmetic — with or without the rest of the theory.

Appendix C — Glossary, honesty notes, and references

C.1 Glossary (in plain English)

  • Closed timelike curve (CTC): a path through spacetime that returns to its own departure point in time. A road, not a portal.
  • Lorentz factor (γ): how much your clock disagrees with a moving clock.
  • Proper time (Δτ): the time you actually experience. Shortest when you travel fastest.
  • Causal debt (D) — M-AT: bits of self-contradiction a loop would carry. Zero for a consistent loop.
  • Causal elasticity — M-AT: the universe absorbs loops and snaps them to consistency, taxing the inconsistent ones.
  • κ — M-AT: the elasticity constant. Bits of debt absorbed for free. UNKNOWN value.
  • Exotic matter: negative-energy matter. Real (Casimir), tiny, needed for wormholes.
  • Casimir effect: the measured attraction of two plates in vacuum, produced by negative energy in the gap.
  • Chronology horizon (Cauchy horizon): the boundary where CTCs first form — and where quantum stress-energy diverges (KRW theorem).
  • Chronology protection (Hawking 1992): the conjecture that physics forbids macroscopic CTCs. Unproven; needs quantum gravity.
  • Novikov self-consistency: only self-consistent histories can occur. “Ad hoc” per Visser, confirmed per Lloyd/Ringbauer.
  • Chronological censorship (Monroe 2008): CTCs exist but always behind event horizons.
  • Deutsch CTC (D-CTC): time travel as a fixed-point equation for a density matrix. Requires modifying QM (Everett 2004).
  • P-CTC: time travel as quantum post-selection. Consistent with standard QM; inconsistent events have zero amplitude.
  • Jinn (Lossev & Novikov 1992): originless looped objects (“first kind”) or information (“second kind”).
  • No-communication theorem: quantum correlations can’t carry messages — and every retrocausal-looking experiment obeys it.
  • Roman ring (Visser 1997): a polygon of wormholes that skirts the single-wormhole obstruction; possibly a flaw in our theory, not a permit.
  • Hippocampus: the brain’s mental time-travel organ. Remembers, and imagines tomorrow.

C.2 Honesty notes

  1. Source verification: Every fact above was checked against the canonical references — the standard time-travel and CTC literature, plus the linked 2024 Scientific Reports paper. Where a page number or a journal volume could not be confirmed, it was left out rather than guessed. Verify page numbers before formal use.
  2. Readable conventions: The Gödel CTC radius appears in the literature with different numerical factors depending on coordinates; I use r_c ≈ c/√(4πGρ) and mark it order-of-magnitude. The Kerr metric is the standard Boyer–Lindquist form. The Morris–Thorne throat condition is standard. Nothing here is a new equation of GR — every equation marked PROPOSED is flagged in the text.
  3. Attribution of the framework: The Menuka–Abhimans Theory (M-AT) — the three postulates, the causal-debt definition, the master law P ∝ e^{−D/κ}, the derivation sketch, and the unification argument — is the contribution of this paper. Every experimental result, theorem, and spacetime solution it rests on is someone else’s life’s work, and is attributed as such. The framework is a synthesis; the synthesis is new; the physics is not.
